Scientific Aspects of Weight Management was the subject at the accredited continuing education of the European Nutraceutical Association (ENA) on 10 March 2012 in Dresden, Germany. ENA President Dr Peter Prock was able to welcome almost 400 experts from different European countries and the USA to the presentation. The participants included specialists from medicine, pharmaceutics, nutritional science and various other healthcare professions.
The aim of the continuing education was to present various modules of a weight reduction programme. With the inclusion of three health psychologists, the list of speakers made it clear how important it also is to consider behavioural change as well as scientifically proven products.
On the product side, the subject of formula diets, products that induce satiety, and a new clinical study on the use of micronutrients in weight reduction were addressed. On the behavioural side, there were talks on motivation, volition (the process of developing a will to overcome barriers to action), and the support of care using internet-based programmes.
The abstracts have been published as "Extended Abstracts" in the current Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism 60 (2):124–130 (2012).
